In addition to the Hartley award, Ms. Deng was also awarded one of two Jim A. Sullivan Outstanding Graduate Student Awards, along with fellow student Ziqian Geng. The Sullivan Award was established by the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research (ASOR) to honor Dr. James Sullivan, who served as chair of that department and subsequently as the dean of the College until he retired. The selected students must show superior scholarship and demonstrate participation, leadership, and service to the ASOR department. The scholarships are funded using a portion of the contributions made by the departmental alumni to the ASOR Foundation. ASOR Chair Dr. Arthur Yeh presented the Sullivan Awards.
A few weeks prior, Ms. Deng also was awarded the 2009 Master Scholarship given by the American Society for Quality Toledo Section. Each year, the ASQ Toledo Section sponsors a quality competition open to four-year and two-year colleges and universities in the area. The Master Scholarship is the highest award of the competition given to the best applicant. Ms. Deng was recognized for her superior academic performance and her leadership role as the president of the student branch of the ASQ Toledo Section. |
