A BGSU economics undergraduate was one of four students nationwide to win a Golden Key leadership award from Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Economics Honorary for her leadership with the local chapter.  Rachel Childers, who is obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Economics, is a student in the IMPACT Learning Community at BGSU. IMPACT (Integrating Moral Principles and Critical Thinking) is designed to move beyond the classroom and engage in critical thinking in the BGSU community and in the community at large.

Dr. Mary Ellen Benedict, professor of economics, nominated Childers for this prestigious honor. "Rachel Childers’ most compelling attribute is her continual desire to understand new and more complex problems.  Over the years, she has come to each of the economics professors and asked for readings on topics that were new to her and we have readily helped because her enthusiasm for learning is contagious.  In addition, Rachel has been a wonderful leader in the Economics Club and Omicron Delta Epsilon, helping last year's president run the meetings, taking charge of the annual trips, bringing in a national speaker, and making sure everything runs smoothly." Childers will serve as the president of the University’s chapter of ODE next year.

Dr. Benedict added that it was easy to nominate Childers because of her academic excellence and leadership skills.

Childers’ future plans include continuing her graduate education in economics at BGSU.
