Four MBA students from BGSU are taking the Challenge – the Global University Investment Research Challenge, to be specific.  Amy Renner, Kathleen Graham, Xi Chen, and Raja Boppana have teamed up to compete against teams from four regional universities. Each team analyzes a company that is publically owned with the intent of valuing the company’s common stock and making a buy, sell, or hold recommendation.

This year, the company that is being analyzed for the competition is Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. Teams write extensive reports, following an established template, and make an oral presentation to a select set of judges from the investment industry.  The competition involving the five universities is organized locally by the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Toledo.  The entire competition, which takes place on a global scale, is organized and supported by the CFA Institute.

CFA is an internationally recognized designation that is highly regarded by investment professionals.  The winner of the local Challenge competition receives an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for the Americas Regional competition, and the winner of the Americas Regional goes on to the Global competition, up against the winners from the other three global regions.

The local competition is scheduled for Saturday, January 30, and presentations are open to the public. Please contact Dr. Dan Klein, chair of BGSU’s Department of Finance, if you are interested in attending.  His email is dklein@bgsu.edu.

Last year’s BGSU Investment Challenge team placed sixth in the Americas competition.
