Twenty-five business students and one faculty member toured the Titan Tire Company in Bryan, Ohio, as part of the MGMT 3300, MGMT 4490 and the ISM student organization. The plant visit was a rare opportunity for business students at BGSU to see first-hand how industrial tires are manufactured from raw material to the finished product. It was also a good chance to ask the management team specific questions about the tire manufacturing process.
Dr. Amelia Carr, director of the College of Business Administration’s Supply Chain Management Institute and a management department faculty member, said the students learned that the Titan Tire Company uses a batch process to make their tires. "It is really fascinating to see how they do it. Their process is mostly vertically integrated with raw materials like rubber, chemicals, some metals, and nylon fabric purchased from suppliers. They are a domestic manufacturer, very capital intensive, and a highly skilled work force. (It takes a year to train their employees to make the tires)." Dr. Carr adds, "They sell their products to customers around the world as well as their source materials. They are one of three companies globally that make a wide variety of off-the-road tires in various sizes."
The Titan Tire Company is one of John Deere’s suppliers for their agriculture equipment. The plant visit and tour was coordinated by Dr. Carr and Mr. Mark Burton, a manager from John Deere, who also gave a presentation to the students during the tour. |
