Master of Science in Applied Statistics
Bowling Green State University offers a Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics which is sponsored jointly by the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students can be admitted to the program by either department. (Please see the BGSU Graduate College website for admission information and the on-line application.)
The primary objective of this master's program is to provide an education in statistics to the student who wishes to become a professional statistician in business, industry, or government. Moreover, this program provides excellent preparation for the student who subsequently wishes to pursue the Ph.D.
In addition to five core courses, the student selects four electives from a wide variety of offerings in applied and mathematical statistics as well as actuarial science and operations research. A fifth elective may be chosen from the above areas, or be any graduate course approved by the advisor (e.g. in computer science, biology, economics, psychology, business). In addition, students choose between writing a thesis or taking a course in research methods in statistics and a passing a comprehensive exam based on the core courses. Master of Science in Applied Statistics with a Specialization in Business Analytics
Beginning in Fall 2011, we now offer a specialization in Business Analytics in addition to the MS Applied Statistics degree.
The explosion of modern computing power and data acquisition techniques has created a profession generally known as business analytics that is in increasing demand. The job market seeks people with a strong background in fundamental statistical training, a solid exposure to operations research, and a firm understanding of management of information systems and business operations.
