Dr. Fuerst is internationally known for his expertise in monetary theory and policy. He is one of a select few to serve as a Senior Economic Advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland which provides great experiences to share with students in the classroom. The BGSU professor is also in the top 4% of most cited economic authors. Dr. Fuerst’s current research project investigates optimal monetary policy in an environment with significant and time-varying credit frictions.

His professional achievements he is most proud of include receiving BGSU’s distinguished Master Teacher Award in 2000 and co-authoring a paper chosen to be presented at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, in Washington, DC, in 2009.  The conference was called to present frontier work on monetary policy in a financial crisis. The paper, entitled “Optimal Monetary Policy in Model with Agency Costs,” subsequently was published in an “A” or top-tier journal.

Dr. Fuerst’s recommendation for a “must read” by all business students is The Great Contraction,” by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz.  He says, “It demonstrates the power of historical and statistical analysis in understanding the US 1929-33, ideas that are VERY important today.”

On a personal note, the most interesting place he has visited is the Old City in Jerusalem.  “My faith is very important to me…this was wonderful.”
