My Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is more than simply preparing materials for classroom presentations, teaching content, and grading tests and assignments, while learning is more than reading textbooks, memorizing facts, and taking tests.   The instructor is responsible for creating a dynamic, collaborative, and engaged learning environment where students are given the opportunity to explore ideas and challenge themselves to learn more.

The instructor is a “facilitator” who encourages students to think critically, rather than be a one-way communicator (lecturer) who spits out information for students to absorb.   The facilitator “guides” students through the material, but what they learn and how they learn is their own responsibility.  The progress they make in the class depends on the student’s efforts to engage in classroom discussion and to apply critical thinking, questioning the information that is presented and asking how it can be applied.  Learning is not simply a passive activity like absorbing facts, but it is an active process where students become engaged and that extends beyond the classroom. Students need a commitment to want to learn

A good instructor will influence students beyond the classroom walls.  Instructors play a role in the students’ lifelong learning journey because learning doesn’t end when the class is over or at graduation from college.

Instructors serve as mentors where students feel comfortable discussing issues that may or may not directly relate to classroom materials, where instructors serve as sounding boards for students.  This involves being available to students outside the classroom.

Overall, a teacher helps lead the student on a journey through successful exploration.
