Case studies are used by many business educators as a tool to teach the complexities of the real business world. Day-to-day business situations are filled with ambiguities, an overwhelming amount of information and complex complexities. The idea of using case studies is to develop analytic and critical thinking abilities, along with communication and organizational skills. In the past, law schools used case studies to prepare future lawyers, however, business educators are now seeing how valuable this type of teaching tool can be used to see whether students are prepared to be managers in business. As part of the case study approach, students will be asked to step into management roles in a real-life business situation. They will read lengthy narratives and be asked to provide their analysis of the circumstances and develop a communication plan of action. By reading through the case study, students will need to sift through all of the information and determine what information is pertinent to the situation, what are the implications of that information, and what should the company's communication strategy be to help resolve the problem or communicate the company's actions. Linked to this page are a number of different case studies. You will be asked to read them at specified times during the course of BA 203. Some of these case studies may be tied to some type of writing assignment.
