James Neal, Plenary Breakfast Speaker

One of Nashville’s most prominent lawyers, James Neal graduated first in his class at Vanderbilt Law School, where he also served as Editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review. He subsequently obtained a master’s degree in tax from Georgetown University.

James Neil began his practice in Washington, DC.  He was asked to join the Justice Dept. under Robert F. Kennedy, and was the first prosecutor to obtain a criminal conviction of Jimmy Hoffa.  He also served as Chief Counsel t the Watergate Special Prosecution Force.

After returning to private practice in Nashville, he served as defense counsel in a number of high profile cases.  He represented Ford Motor Company when Ford was charged with reckless homicide for the deaths of three women who died when their Pinto’s gas tank exploded.  He also represented Dr. Nichopousos , the doctor of Elvis Presley; former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards; director John Landis, after the fatal crash of a helicopter on the set of “Twilight Zone: The Movie;” and Exxon, after the oil spill caused by the Exxon Valdez.
