James McFillen, D.B.A

Professor
Director, Master of Organization Development Program
Office: 3012 Business Administration
Phone: (419) 372-8230
Email: jmcfill@bgsu.edu

Dr. McFillen’s primary areas of expertise include -

  • Organizational Behavior: motivation, leadership, teams, decision making, organizational structure, and
  • Organization Development: planned change in organizations; organizational diagnosis.

He currently is working with colleagues to develop a model of organizational diagnosis for use in change management. According to Dr. McFillen, “In order to achieve the right type of change, the change leader(s) must know what needs to be changed, just as a medical doctor must know what is wrong to prescribe an appropriate treatment. Unfortunately, the field of organization development has paid little attention to the diagnosis process, often providing inaccurate or incomplete explanations of diagnosis. After an extensive analysis of the OD literature and studies of the engineering, medical, and nursing diagnosis models, we developed a standard model of diagnosis and applied that model to organizational diagnosis. The result is a more thorough and rigorous model of organizational diagnosis that is based in the scientific method and in evidence-based practice.”

Dr. McFillen’s proudest accomplishments include his many students who have gone on to successful careers in academics, business, and the public sector; the Behling and McFillen Model of Charismatic Leadership, which was developed and tested internationally; and the Evidence-based Model of Organizational Diagnosis, which is the first formal model of organizational diagnosis for the field of organization development and change. In terms of teaching, “I have had extensive involvement with curriculum design and development, including the MOD curriculum, the management specialization, and the EMBA and MBA curricula. I led the process of revising EMBA into a weekend format, establishing the EMBA study abroad, and moving EMOD to web-centric delivery. I also have incorporated cross-cultural issues into my courses and have designed several experiential teaching modules for the MOD program.”

He fell in love with the college-experience, which led him to becoming a professor. “I enjoy learning and the process of organizing that learning into useful knowledge. Sometimes, being a professor is like being an explorer, i.e., investigating new territory and developing new insights into phenomena of interest. Other times, being a professor is like being a trail guide, i.e., helping others navigate through academic territory that is unfamiliar to them but well known to you.”

His research and consulting work with numerous public and private sector organizations and 17 years in university administration give him outstanding experience to share with students. He also has travelled extensively in the US and internationally.  McFillen says it’s hard to choose his favorite location to visit“the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Canyon, whale watching off the coast of Maine, the Charles Bridge in Prague, and the Tower of London….who can choose?”
