E-Commerce/Internet Marketing
"Forget the geeks and finance people: Marketers are the
new rock stars of the Internet."**
This opening line of a USA Today article points to the many exciting job opportunities
for marketers in the area of e-commerce / Internet marketing. The "dot.com" companies
are eager to hire people who know how to build brands and maintain long-term
relationships with customers. Some general advice on how to excel at an Internet
company can be found at monster.com
(http://dotcom.monster.com/articles/newbie/)
- which itself is a successful online venture.
"Stability" and "job security," however, are not terms often associated with
these jobs. In fact, the general consensus is that the majority of Internet ventures
are doomed to fail. Further, the starting pay is typically low, and the hours
are long. What draws people to these jobs is the opportunity to be associated
with this exciting, new, cutting edge technology; and, of course, also the potentially
large, long-term payoff - perhaps in stock options! Many of these jobs are in
the Silicon Valley area of California (near San Francisco).
There are also Internet-marketing opportunities with traditional, established
companies that are trying to leverage the Internet for their own advantage.
